Lucky Plaza Open #4 : upsets, Hainan chicken and a new champion

Sixteen players, a restaurant buzzing with anticipation and the biggest upset of the night in round one. The Lucky Plaza Open is fast becoming a fixture of the Bali ping pong scene.

Lucky Plaza Open ping pong tournament in Bali

Lucky Plaza is doing something new for Bali: regular, social, competitive ping pong, with good food and a crowd to match. This edition drew sixteen players, and they played it on our Spinworks Pro.

The upset

Ed came in as reigning champion. He went out in the first round, beaten by Leon, a padel coach who then carried that form through the rest of the draw to take the title. Padel ability does transfer to ping pong, it turns out.

The family

If there had been a team prize, it would have gone to one family, who turned up in numbers and dominated the tournament from start to finish.

The crowd

A few Indonesian creators and actors came down too, which added some glitz and glamour to the night.

The food

Lucky Plaza’s Hainan chicken kept everyone going between rounds. Nobody went home hungry, and the complimentary tacos provided much solace for the players who went out early.

The table

We were proud to see the tournament played on the Spinworks Pro. One player called it 'an absolute masterpiece' after a beer afterwards, which we’ll happily take. The level of gameplay was high and the matte black table looked great in the setting.

A great atmosphere, and a trailblazer for table tennis in Canggu.

Ed has a title to win back, so we’ll be there next month. Want to play the next one? Join the WhatsApp group to hear about it first.
